I have only been painting a short time so I was looking for something to help me with color mixing. This has been most helpful in identifying which color combinations create which shades. I am still struggling with ceating the exact shade but this is probably due to my inexperience and I believe will come in time.

I can’t easily take my watercolor mixing charts with me so I was looking for something pocket-sized with a basic cheat sheet of mixes to have on hand. This was a really nice little book. Not quite pocket sized, but I can fit it in my pochade box anyway! Very handy little tool especially for mixes that I don’t use all the time!

Michael Wilcox opened my eyes to the difficulty in mixing pure dyes to appropriate colors. His other book >Blue and Yellow Don’t Make Green<, was the theory; this text is the proof. His primary focus was in painting, but it explained the odd colors I was getting mixing dyes. This books gives example of color mixing to get shades and tints from pure colors, and how to mix them for painting. I was able to adapt his ideas and find colors I needed when mixing dyes. This book is an exemplar of the colors mixed with tints from the colors primarily used. While not an exact match for dyes (fewer pure colors), it still gives many examples of what to expect as colors mix pre-dyeing.

A great book for beginning artists like myself. It helps me everyday to plan my colors. Using this book I feel more confident in finding the right colors. While I am learning to get a feeling for mixing colors, being able to do it intuitively, I can rely on the swatches in the book to give me the right hints.
I use this book in two ways with all my paintings.
First, before I start painting, I plan the colors with the book: I make combinations of colors before actually mixing them. What will be the darks, the lights, the cools, and the warms.
Then later, when I want to make a color that I need and I don’t know how to do it, I can simply look up the nearest color in the swatches and find out how to get there.
So, thanks Michael, great job.
